Beaches & Tide Pools

Aerial of West Beach with Stearns Wharf

West Beach

Home base

Our daily gathering place: a wide, calm, family-friendly beach between the harbor and Stearns Wharf, next to the Small Craft Quiet Water Area. Morning circle, sand-and-wave science, and barefoot running on soft sand.

Low tide at Leadbetter Beach

Leadbetter Beach & Santa Barbara Point tide pools

Approx. 10–15 min walk

At low tide, the rocky reef toward Santa Barbara Point exposes anemones, crabs, and seaweeds. We read the tide charts first, then observe and record with “look, don’t take” rules.

East Beach

Approx. 20 min walk / 5 min bike

A long sandy beach east of the wharf, great for longer barefoot runs, beach games, and comparing sand and wave patterns with West Beach.

Harbor & Pier

Aerial of the Santa Barbara marina and breakwater

Santa Barbara Harbor & Breakwater

Approx. 5–10 min walk

A working harbor full of fishing boats, sea lions, and seabirds. Walking out the breakwater, kids study how it traps sand, why the harbor is dredged, and how tides and currents move.

Santa Barbara Maritime Museum

Approx. 10 min walk (in the harbor)

Hands-on exhibits on local maritime history, navigation, ocean science, and Chumash seafaring. The museum also runs school and group programs. Great for a rainy day too.

Brown pelican on Stearns Wharf

Stearns Wharf

Approx. 10 min walk

California’s oldest working wooden wharf. Pelican and seabird watching, sketching, and a lesson in how piers are built and maintained.

Sea Center (Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History) on Stearns Wharf

Approx. 10–15 min walk

Touch pools with local sea anemones and hermit crabs, a shark and ray touch pool, and a crawl-through tide pool tank. A perfect follow-up to what we found on the reef.

Lil’ Toot Water Taxi

Harbor ↔ Stearns Wharf

A short narrated boat ride between the harbor and the wharf, a fun way to see the coast from the water and talk about boats, buoys, and navigation.

Parks, Paths & Playgrounds

Leadbetter Beach through trees from Shoreline Park

Shoreline Park

Approx. 15–20 min walk

A bluff-top park with lawns, a playground, a whale-tail sculpture, and wide views of the Channel Islands. Whale and dolphin spotting, picnic lunches, and stairs down to the beach.

Palm-lined beachfront bike path in Santa Barbara

Cabrillo Beachway (waterfront bike & walking path)

Starts at our doorstep

The beachfront path linking the harbor, West Beach, the wharf, East Beach, and the Bird Refuge. Our main route for walking field trips, bike days, and steady-pace running.

Palm-lined path along Chase Palm Park

Chase Palm Park & Shipwreck Playground

Approx. 20 min walk / 5 min bike

Lawns, a lagoon, creeks, and a shipwreck-themed playground with separate areas for younger and older kids. Good for free play, picnics, and talking about local shipwreck history.

Skater’s Point Skatepark

Approx. 15 min walk

A free waterfront skatepark next to Chase Palm Park. A place to practice balance and courage (helmets and pads required).

Pershing Park

Approx. 2–5 min walk

Ballfields and open space right next to West Beach. Our spot for running games, relays, and field days.

Los Baños del Mar Pool

Approx. 2–5 min walk

A historic heated 50-meter public pool on the waterfront, opened in 1939. A natural fit for swim skills and water safety alongside ocean days.

Kids’ World at Alameda Park

Approx. 10–15 min bike

Santa Barbara’s largest playground, a community-built wooden castle, for climbing, imaginative play, and an end-of-term celebration.

Museums, Art & Neighborhood

MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation

Approx. 10–15 min walk

A hands-on science museum in the Funk Zone, with sound, light, motion, and tinkering exhibits that make physics and engineering easy to touch. MOXI also hosts occasional homeschool days.

Aerial of the Funk Zone and Mission Creek leading to the beach and Stearns Wharf

Funk Zone murals

Approx. 10–15 min walk

Outdoor street art in the neighborhood between the beach and downtown. We use it for art walks, sketching, and talking about color, composition, and community art.

Wildlife & Longer Bike Trips

Santa Barbara Zoo

Approx. 15–20 min bike via the beachway

A small, walkable zoo on a hill above the ocean, used for animal observation, habitat comparison, and conservation units.

Andrée Clark Bird Refuge

Approx. 15–20 min bike via the beachway

A freshwater lagoon next to the zoo with a path around it. Birding, binoculars, and comparing freshwater and saltwater habitats.

Sandstone bluff at Santa Barbara Point above Leadbetter Beach

La Mesa Park & the Mesa bluffs

Approx. 15–20 min bike (uphill)

A shady neighborhood park with a playground and ocean views on the Mesa above Shoreline Park. Bluff walks, geology talk about marine terraces, and picnic days.

Douglas Family Preserve

Approx. 25–30 min bike (older groups)

Coastal bluff-top trails with oak and cypress groves, monarch butterfly habitat, and views over Arroyo Burro Beach. A longer outing for older kids, with the steep bluff edges always kept in mind.
